Know what’s included, how to enroll, and why it matters.
In New Zealand, all children and teenagers are entitled to free basic dental care until they turn 18. But understanding how to access it—and when to take action—is key to making the most of the programme.
Whether your child is 5 or 15, here’s what every parent or caregiver should know.

🦷 What’s Actually Covered?
The free dental scheme, provided through the Ministry of Health, covers essential dental services, including:
Regular check-ups and exams
Cleanings (scale and polish)
Fillings and extractions
Fluoride applications and sealants
X-rays (when needed)
✅ From birth to Year 8, care is provided by dental therapists at community dental clinics. ✅ From Year 9 until age 18, teens can receive care from private dentists who are approved under the public system.
And yes—it’s completely free of charge when you use the right providers.
⚠️ What’s Not Covered?
While the scheme is generous, there are a few limits:
Braces and orthodontic work (even for medical reasons)
Tooth whitening or cosmetic procedures
Any treatment done by non-approved private clinics
💡 If you choose a dentist outside the approved list, you’ll need to pay privately, even if your child is under 18.
🧭 How to Enrol and Book Care
To access care, your child must be enrolled in the system. Here’s what to do:
Call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583)
You’ll be referred to the nearest available clinic or approved dentist
For teens, ask which local providers are registered with the scheme
Early enrolment is key—especially before they reach high school. This ensures your child doesn’t miss routine check-ups or important preventive care.
🌱 Why It’s Worth It
Good oral health in childhood doesn’t just protect baby teeth—it shapes a child’s future. When kids have access to regular dental care, they’re less likely to suffer from pain, infections, or early tooth loss. That means better concentration in school, fewer missed days, and more confidence to smile, speak, and eat comfortably. And the benefits don’t stop there, poor oral health early in life is linked to more serious issues later on. That’s why staying on top of dental check-ups is one of the simplest, most powerful things you can do for your child’s long-term health.
